GENETIC DIVERSITY

Background:

With the completion of the draft sequence of the dog genome, the canine genome sequence is available to search for known markers and genes.

Project Goal:

To process over 400 microsatellite markers from all 38 autosomal and 2 sex chromosomes. Each chromosome has an average of 10 primer sets. The primers are 1Kb apart.

We will be utilizing new advances in genotyping technology ("SNP chips") that will allow us to characterize tens of thousands to over 100,000 markers per dog in the form of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). * For this type of analysis we will need to collect blood. *

Project Status:

Microsatellites: Completion of the first round of panel screening. Replacement of uninformal markers and development of new markers. All markers have been tested on several groups of families consisting of various breeds.

SNPs: We are developing SNP marker panels for high-throughput genotyping platforms.
